Vologda Region is a part of the Northwest Federal District and borders eight Russian regions: Arkhangelsk Region in the North, Kirov Region in the East, Kostroma and Yaroslavl Regions in the South, Tver and Novgorod Regions in the Southwest, Leningrad Region in the West and the Republic of Karelia in the Northwest.

The climate of the Vologda Region is moderately continental. Long moderately cold winters and relatively short warm summers are typical for the Region. The climate of Region East is harsher than in West.

The average temperature in January is from -11 °C / -14 °C, the average temperature in July is +16 °C / +18 °C. Atmospheric precipitation are rich and their average annual rate is 500-650 mm/year (peak in the summer). The region is rich in rivers, lakes and swamps. Snow cover time is 165-170 days. The duration of the growing season is about 130 days.

The location of Vologda Region is unique due to transport hub of motorways, railways, air traffic from Europe to Asia, Volga-Baltic Waterway and its vicinity to Russian cities of Moscow, Saint Petersburg and foreign North European markets.
