The development of agriculture, food industry, and fish farming is considered a promising direction for the agro-industrial complex in the region. The open water bodies in the region are used for breeding rainbow trout, sturgeon species, whitefishes (grayling, muksun, nelma), carp, while sturgeon species and clariids are bred in enclosed water supply systems on fish farms. The production of aquaculture products has increased significantly in the last 10 years. The Vologda region is the leader in legal black caviar production in the whole country. 60% of the caviar on the market is marked by "Vologda stamp."
Milk processing occupies a leading position in the food industry, accounting for about 50% of all products produced. The milk processing factories in the region offer a wide range of traditional Russian dairy products, from milk to cheese. Exceptionally delicious and environmentally clean food products are produced in the Vologda region.
The Vologda region is known for its expansive forests, which cover over 81% of its territory. 76% of the harvested timber is processed within the region. Vologda ranks third in terms of timber harvesting volume and every fourth in prefabricated wooden houses. The international exhibition "Russian Forest" takes place in Vologda every December, gathering leading global companies in the forestry sector. The chemical industry is also a system-forming factor in the region's economy. There is a constant investment in new production facilities and increasing the production of high-value-added products. Machinery industry plays a significant role in the structure of industrial production in the Vologda region. It is represented by numerous enterprises in different cities, such as Vologda, Cherepovets, Veliky Ustyug and others. This sector is characterized by a multi-sectoral structure and produces a wide range of products for both production and consumption.
